![]() PROJECT 86 - Truthless Heroes - Atlantic, 2002: 10/10; You don't have it = You are crap. OhmyGodohmyGodohmyASS! I heard them play a few songs from this album a year and a half ago, and since then, waiting for this album to come out was like waiting to PEE for a year and a half. I don't even want to compare it to either of their other ones, because T.H. is totally original. The overall sound is much more hard and hostile, and the album's lyrics flow together from song to song, narrating the life of a man who faces all of the challenges that life brings. This last fact amazed me; the lyrics tell the story of a man, from birth("Out of the playground's ashes...") through life, and through death (...but now it's far too late... when we are hollow again). I'm going nucking futs because I can't see them on the 24th, but I swear I'm going to see them again.... P.S.- Andrew Schwab's (singer) independently-published book of poetry, entitled "We Caught You Plotting Murder", is available from truthlessheroes.com (click the P86 logo above). |
SLAYER - God Hates Us All - American, 2001: 9/10; Metaaaaaaaal!! Destruction, carnage, Slayer. Their third decade tenth full-length album, and Slayer hasn't slowed down, softened up, or cut their hair. The songs are reminiscent of late '80s-era Slayer: a combo of brute power, courtesy of Tom's bass and Paul's drumming; and wicked solos from our old buddies, Kerry and Jeffy. However, Slayer seems to be trying too hard to sell their anti-Christian point of view in this album, moreso than the others; songs like "War Ensemble" and "Chemical Warfare" are replaced with "Darkness of Christ" and "God Send Death." Overall, their best album in years, and I'm looking forward to seeing them again. |

The official website of PA hardcore!! Listen to these bands... now. |
![]() CONVERGE - Jane Doe - Equal Vision, 2001: 7/10; Probably worth having If you ever wondered what carnage sounds like, listen to Converge. It's like a musical depiction of the criminally insane. And you know what? It sounds pretty darn good. I'm a sucker for super-fast, super-loud, super-brutal music, and this nails it. It rivals "When Forever Comes Crashing" as the best Converge album. All around good stuff if you're a true metalcore disciple. |

ANDREW W.K. - I Get Wet - Island Records, 2002: 7/10; Buy it and rock out Crüe style. I read a review for this CD on another site and it used the term "power pop" to define this band's style. I think that's a pretty good way to describe them, but they're not another one of these upstart pop-punk bands that aim for preteen girls. I'd describe Andrew W.K.'s sound as Def Leppard with all their arms and more balls. Excellent use of midi sounds and samples throughout the CD. On a related note, these guys played Saturday Night Live, as well as the Warped Tour, shortly after I bought the CD and they rocked out. They pulled off what few bands with synth help can do; they duplicated the CD's electronic sounds on stage. Overall a good CD. Favorite tracks: "I Get Wet" and "Ready to Die". |
